We've learned that there appears to be yet another rash of *spam/spoof emails* widely appearing in people's inboxes in recent weeks, all across the country emails which have every APPEARANCE of having been sent directly to YOU from someone at any number of reputable, well established, and well known flute-related companies BUT INSTEAD they are actually spoofs and pure spam, some asking or directing you to look at what turn out to be very dangerous attachments, -- and all of this is. simply put: "mischief that's hiding itself in flute-clothing"!
We've received some of them ourselves as well -- even had emails which claim to originate from "flutenet.com" (which absolutely cannot be the genuine article because, quite simply - it's not logistically possible for us to send anybody an email from "flutenet.com"!) But we're only one of an apparently increasing number of otherwise respectable flute-related names who have been spoofed in emails in recent weeks and odds are, if you have an email inbox, you've gotten a few of these as well
SO THOUGHT A REMINDER ABOUT IT MIGHT BE WORTHWHILE: Do NOT automatically assume that the listed "sender" of an email is indeed the actual author and "sender" of *any* particular email -- that goes for your own relatives and friends as well as "flute -related companies"!
If there's any doubt -- any doubt at all -- check it out! Ask about it. Let the "sender" know what you received - "in their name" - and ask if it was indeed something they actually did send out... you'll be doing both them and yourself a favor - and defeat the intent of the spammers!

The Rudall and Rose Catalogue is a research project aimed at locating and databasing all the still-exisiting "simple- system" flutes made by this company.
Although a fire circa 1860 destroyed all the companys records from the time, it is thought they had made some 7,200 instruments of this style before turning their efforts to the various Boehm, Carte and Radcliffe key systems (and moving away from the 4 - 10+ keyed flutes, the "simple system" flutes, as they're called), surely there are many still left - but no one until now has undertaken to find out.
David Migoya is spearheading a volunteer, non-profit, "labor of love" effort to locate and catalog any remaining examples of these particular instruments - the "simple system" flutes of Rudall and Rose. He's already sharing his findings on his website: www.RudallRose.com - and he hopes you might be willing to share too!
(Already it is worth a visit - there is a wealth of information there about these flutes and their makers, and also some wonderful pictures!)
SO - If you happen to have - and/or - know of any exisiting Rudall and Rose's "simple system" flutes - or even if you're simply curious - please take a look at the website, and do contact David about it!
We are already moving forward with our new project, and it's as exciting as we thought it might be! It began on January 1, 2000 -- actively searching out, interviewing, collecting, archiving, and organizing the history of the Flute Industry in America, since WWII... and several people have already shared some marvelously helpful things with us, while simultaneously taking us up on our offer to help them create more space for themselves! (Actually - we're not that picky about the *starting* time - if you have something dating older than WWII that you'd be willing to share, it would be sincerely welcomed as well!)
SO - in the coming weeks, while you're digging out and/or putting away again all those boxes of holiday decorations (and we know that not everybody gets around to that right away...), please look around those storage places, and PLEASE - won't you keep an eye out for us, for ANYTHING you might have kept about flutes, or flute makers, or places that sold flutes, between the early 1940's and 1990...???!!! We would be most delighted to beg or borrow original catalogs, flyers, pictures, sales receipts (for example), -- and to hear of any stories you or your family might have about buying flutes during those years, etc.!
In Particular -- we're looking right now for manufacturer catalogs from any point in time prior to 1990...any chance there's one in your attic that you might share with us??????

The Flutists' Family Tree is a project that traces the lineage, from student to teacher, back through the past 250 years of transverse flute playing. Currently, it links about 1,700 flutists genealogically with their ancestors all the way back through such historical figures as Georges Barrere, Paul Taffanel, Francois Devienne and Michel Blavet. Its aim is to provide connections between musicians, renew relationships between students and teachers, increase awareness of our common history, and provide a starting point for research into the pedagogical traits of important flute teachers.
This project depends upon the help of the entire flute community, through submission of personal information, private research into the heritage of specific teachers, publicity and funding. It is inclusive of all flutists - regardless of professional musical status or performance ability. Almost 90% of all flutists in the United States today can trace their musical ancestry through William Kincaid - whether they play in the finest orchestras or just started taking lessons!

This will, no doubt, be edited for content and space considerations in public displays, but the entirety of the information will be available for the purpose of research.
